Reggaeton is a form of urban music that first became popular with Latin American youths in the early 1990s. Reggaeton's predecessor originated in Panama as Reggae en Español. After the music's gradual exposure in Puerto Rico, it eventually evolved into reggaeton. It blends British West reggae and dancehall with Latin American genres, as well as hip hop. Modern reggaeton beats follow the structure of the Dem Bow Riddim, a beat created by Jamaican producers Steely & Clevie in the late 80s and early 90s. However, over the years, it has been losing every noticeable similarity with its original reggae origins.

How do you defend reggaeton?
URBAN LATIN FEATURED ARTIST CHACAL Y YAKARTA CHACAL Y YAKARTA The most important and international most successful REGGAETON artists from Cuba next to Wisin Y Yandel, Daddy Yankee, J Alvarez, Alexis Y Fido, Farruko, Arcangel or Rasta Baby. How to Dance Reggaeton. Reggaeton is a type of late 1990s dance that began in Puerto Rico. It's strongly influenced by Latin American, Caribbean, and hip hop music, and this fun, sexy, free-spirited style of dance is popular in nightclubs.
Growing up in South America (around 2005), reggaeton was becoming popular, but liking it was often associated with having lower education or resources (it's still the case in many places), and that perception bothers me, but it can be difficult to shake off. My friends make fun of me because I listen to it everyday and I'm the 'reggaeton connoisseur' now ever since I started embracing my latina-ness (I was a punk rock kid growing up). I don't mind that though because I'm proud and impressed with what the genre has evolved into, and also love the classics and pioneers. I basically love it as a whole.
I think that reggaeton has been an incredible medium for having the latin voice heard across the globe and it's just the beginning of what we're capable of as a culture.
Something that pops up is the topic of the content of the songs and I can't think of good arguments for it other than maybe it's what sells (though don't even believe that's the case). 'Vete pal carajo, cagate en tu madre, no quiero una puta perra que me joda ni me ladre, ahora tengo par de golfas, hago trios y desmadres...' This is from Se Te Hizo Tarde by Ñejo, which is one of my favorite tracks musically but verses like this totally kill it for me. And this isn't even bad compared to countless others that are way worse. Remember, grew up in South America so I'm thick skinned with words, but there are verses I just can't fw.
Bottom line is, I love reggaeton, it's pure energy but some songs go overboard (imo) and taint the genre, making it be associated with low consciousness & quality. What are your thoughts and how do you argue in favor of it despite some of the content?
